Fuchs Dystrophy

What is a Fuchs' Dystrophy?

Fuchs’ Dystrophy is one of the most common causes of corneal edema.  It may be inherited or occur without any family history.  It occurs because of dysfunction of the layer of cells that lines the inner-most part of the cornea. Fluids from the inside and outside of the eye are constantly leaking into the cornea.  These cells are responsible for pumping this fluid out of the cornea keeping it compact and clear.  DSAEK surgery replaces these dysfunctional cells.
