What is blepharitis?

Blepharitis is a chronic infection that occurs along the edges of the eyelids. It often accompanies dry eyes and builds up slowly over a period of several years.

Causes

Some people produce excess oil in the glands near their eyelashes. This oil encourages the growth of bacteria, which causes the skin to become irritated, itchy, and red. In blepharitis, tiny scales also form along the edges of the eyelids, causing the skin to become even further irritated.

Treatment

Blepharitis is treated with medicated ointment or an oral antibiotic.

If you are experiencing some of the symptoms described here, it does not necessarily mean you have blepharitis. However, if you experience one or more of these symptoms, you should contact your eye doctor for a complete exam. Click here for information on emergency or immediate care.
